Introduction This CD-ROM is a supplementary CD-ROM to the Nikkei MAC Book "Getting Started with Linux on a Mac."

●Partition preparation is required before installation. The "pdisk" used for this is included in the "macosutils" folder.

●Select the package to be installed after the installer starts. The package selected as Default is sufficient for practical use. If you install everything, you will need approximately 950MB of space. Also, even if you want to install all of them, avoid selecting "CHRP Kernel," "PMAC Kernel," and "PreP Kernel" at the same time. The "Miscelaneous" category includes all files that are not classified and included in other packages.

●"LinuxPPC 1999 Installer" is software that copies files necessary for starting Linux to the Mac OS side. After completing the preparations with this software, the actual installation begins. For other installation details, please see Chapter 2 of this book.

The CD-ROM contains several files that the author considered useful, including the Lite version of "LinuxPPC 1999v2" and the advance shipping version of the Japanese language kit "Kagero."

LinuxPPC 1999 is a Linux distribution for Power Mac distributed by LinuxPPC (http://www.linuxppc.com/). The Lite version was created by the author by removing the development environment etc. from the full version.

"Kagero" is a Japanese language kit for LinuxPPC 1999 produced by Amulet (Akihabara, Tokyo, http://www.amulet.co.jp/). This CD-ROM contains a still-in-development version of Kagero, which lacks some features that are scheduled to be included in the final shipping version. Additionally, although an installer is planned to be provided in the final shipping version, what is included on this CD-ROM is a collection of "rpm files".

"Kagero" files are divided into "basic" and "expert". For normal use, please use only the "basic" file. If you install all the files included in basic according to the steps explained in Chapter 5 of this book, your LinuxPPC 1999 will be able to be localized to Japanese.

The Expert folder contains files intended for more advanced users. However, since it is a still-in-development version, there are cases where dependency checks are inadequate. Please use with sufficient caution.

The recorded files, with some exceptions, are free software that is redistributed under the GPL. Therefore, you are free to redistribute the files as long as you comply with the GPL.

Please note that due to capacity limitations, the CD-ROM does not contain the source code, except for a few sources. The source code is available on the Nikkei MAC website (http://www.nikkeimac.com/), so if you need it, please download it there.
